Acts Theology 47: The 276 and Righteousness

In Acts 27:37, it is recorded, "We were in all 276 persons in the ship." This seemingly random detail may carry a deeper, messianic significance. The extraordinary survival of all 276 individuals on Paul’s ship can be seen as a cryptic reference to God's saving power.
The number 276 is a triangular number, meaning it is the sum of integers from 1 to 23. This number is also the gematria equivalent for the Hebrew phrase "Yahweh our righteousness" (YHWH tsidkenu), which is found twice in the Hebrew Bible, in Jeremiah 23:6 and Jeremiah 33:16. These Jeremiah passages prophesy the coming of a "righteous Branch"—the Messiah—who will save Judah and Israel.
This numerical connection suggests that Luke, while reporting a literal number, may also be telegraphing a theological point to a discerning reader. The survival of everyone on the ship under divine protection mirrors the greater salvation promised through the Messiah, who is ultimately "The LORD our righteousness." This event in Acts echoes the spiritual salvation found in Christ, the righteous King who saves His people.
