Acts Theology 45: Light to the Nations

Acts 26:22-23 states that the Christ must suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, proclaiming light to both the Jewish people and the Gentiles. This "light" is a specific message: the gospel of Jesus Christ's suffering, resurrection, and the salvation found through faith in Him. It is not a vague concept of personal enlightenment but a clear proclamation.
This message echoes Isaiah 49:6, which foretells a Servant who will be a "light for the nations" so that God's salvation may reach the ends of the earth. In Luke 2:32, the infant Jesus is already recognized as this "light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel," signifying the initial arrival of this promised light. The language of turning "from darkness to light" and "from the power of Satan to God" (Acts 26:18) reinforces that this "light" is the specific gospel message, not a general or self-contemplative idea.
The New Testament clarifies that the blinding of the minds of unbelievers mentioned in 2 Corinthians 4:4 is due to "the god of this world," Satan, actively preventing them from seeing "the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ." This understanding helps to interpret some Old Testament passages like Isaiah 6, where God's active blinding of people's eyes was a punishment. Yet, salvation is ultimately for both Jews and Gentiles, as Acts details the Spirit-empowered mission of the church to carry this specific light to the world.
