Acts Theology 43: Heresy Before Constantine

Acts 24:5 states, "We have found this man a plague, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes." This verse shows Paul being accused by Tertullus of being a ringleader of the Nazarene "sect." The Greek word for "sect" here is *hairesis*, which in this context means something like a school, party, or division within a larger religion. It is a neutral term, also used for Sadducees and Pharisees in Acts.
When used by adversaries, however, *hairesis* takes on a negative, pejorative meaning, as seen when Paul's enemies use it to delegitimize him and the followers of Jesus. The adjective form, *hairetikos*, found in Titus 3:10, warns against "a man that is factious or divisive," which is where the English word "heretic" derives. The existence of these terms and their usage in the New Testament and Second Temple Jewish literature demonstrates that the concept of distinguishing between faithful teaching and destructive distortion, or orthodoxy and error, was not a later invention of the Roman Empire or councils like Nicaea.
The New Testament writers and Jewish texts from the Second Temple period already identified religious views and ideas as being "out of the mainstream" or "aberrations." This shows that the discernment of truth from error was an apostolic concern, predating later church politics and theological development. The early Christian community actively addressed false teaching and divisive practices, indicating that the need to uphold sound doctrine and reject destructive distortion was present from the beginning of the church.
