Acts Theology 42: Sadducees and Angelification

Acts 23:8 states, "For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit." This verse implies the Sadducees deny the existence of angels, but considering they regarded the Pentateuch as authoritative, which explicitly mentions angels, their denial isn't a simple rejection of angels as beings. Instead, it seems they denied a specific concept related to angels and resurrection.
During the Second Temple period, the concept of "angelification" was common among various Jewish sects, including the Qumran community. This idea posited that righteous individuals, upon death, would be glorified and made like angels in God's presence. Therefore, the Sadducees' denial was not of angels themselves, but rather of this "alternative resurrection" where a dead person would return as an angel or divine spirit.
By challenging this specific understanding, the Sadducees were not denying evident biblical facts, but rather a prevalent theological interpretation of the time. This highlights that theological disputes often revolve around the interpretation of existing concepts rather than outright rejection of widely accepted truths.
