Acts Theology 41: Sanhedrin and Seventy

The number seventy carries cosmic memory.
In the Bible, key events often connect to symbolic numbers. The Sanhedrin, which Paul faces in Acts, follows the pattern of the seventy elders appointed to lead Israel in Numbers 11. This number "seventy" points back even further, to the seventy nations listed in Genesis 10. Deuteronomy 32 then describes God allotting these nations while setting Israel apart for himself.
Acts places Paul before Israel's council of seventy to show that the gospel, now going to the nations, is fulfilling God's ancient plan for both Israel and the world.
This matters because Acts keeps Israel and the nations in the same theological story.
