Acts Theology 39: Idolatry and Economy

Acts 19:23-27 describes a disturbance concerning "the Way" (the gospel), where a silversmith named Demetrius warns his fellow craftsmen that "there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship." This passage illustrates that the gospel threatens an economy built around idols like Artemis.
Historically, the cult of Artemis at Ephesus was highly syncretistic, incorporating elements of earlier Phrygian and Phoenician deities. The temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and religion in the ancient world was deeply intertwined with kinship, politics, and economics. Therefore, Paul's preaching, which diminished the importance of Artemis and her temple, was seen not only as a theological challenge but also as a political act and a threat to the economic life of the city. Isaiah 44:9-20 similarly exposes the absurdity of making and worshipping idols, asserting that "All who fashion idols are nothing... He makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it," highlighting the powerlessness of handmade deities compared to the living God.
The message is clear: true worship cannot coexist with idol worship. The account in Acts shows how people understood that Paul's message was not about adding Jesus to an existing pantheon or toolkit of spiritual practices, but rather an exclusive claim to truth. This is reflected in 1 Thessalonians 1:9, which celebrates turning "to God from idols to serve the living and true God." The early church in Ephesus, decades later, was commended in Revelation 2:6 for not compromising their faith by disconnecting themselves from Artemis and other foreign deities, enduring hardship and persecution for their unwavering commitment to Christ.
