Acts Theology 38: Name Not Magic

Acts 19 records some itinerant Jewish exorcists invoking the name of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” When they encountered a man with an evil spirit, the spirit responded, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” The man then overpowered them, causing them to flee naked and wounded. This reveals that the name of Jesus is not a magical incantation or a tool to be used without genuine relationship or allegiance to Him.
The narrative illustrates that some people mistakenly thought the power demonstrated by Paul was due to magical techniques. The episode of the sons of Sceva highlights that the power of the Holy Spirit is not to be mixed with magical or occult practices, similar to how Simon in an earlier account tried to pay for the ability to impart the Holy Spirit. Ancient Near Eastern belief systems often involved knowing the name of a deity to exert power over that entity, and these exorcists attempted to apply this practice to Jesus’ name. The account, however, emphasizes that this approach failed spectacularly, demonstrating that Jesus' power is not a technique that can be added to an existing "toolbox" of pagan or magical practices.
The appropriate response to the authority of Jesus' name is complete allegiance and the rejection of all other practices that might attempt to coexist with Him. Believers who had previously engaged in magic arts confessed their practices and burned their magical books, indicating a decisive turning away from such things. This signifies that Jesus cannot coexist with these practices; it's an "either this or none of the above" message. The power of God is not some new chapter in an occult ritual arsenal but demands a full commitment, as the Ephesians church later demonstrated by not compromising their faith with foreign deities despite persecution.
