Acts Theology 34: Areopagus Theology

"The God who made the world and everything in it... now commands all people everywhere to repent... he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world..." (Acts 17:24-31). This highlights that God is the Creator, Lord of nations, and the one who sets boundaries. Because all people are accountable to Him, they are commanded to repent, as God has appointed a judge and given assurance of this judgment by raising him from the dead.
The theological framework in Acts links back to the Old Testament, particularly the worldview presented in Deuteronomy 32. This includes the understanding that the Most High distributed the nations and set their territorial limits "according to the number of the sons of God" (Deuteronomy 32:8). This divine ordering of nations applies even to pagan societies, like those Paul was addressing, placing them under the Creator's ultimate authority.
Therefore, the Creator's rule over nations inevitably leads to accountability through resurrection and judgment. This message, rooted in ancient biblical theology, presents a call to repentance and provides a basis for public theology even in a pagan context, emphasizing God's universal sovereignty and the ultimate judgment of all people.
