Acts Theology 33: Python Spirit and Most High

In Philippi, a slave girl with a "spirit of divination" - literally a "python spirit" in the Greek - kept crying out about Paul and his companions (Acts 16:16-18). Python was a real divine being in the ancient world, tied to the Delphic oracle. That same title, "Most High," shows up again when an unclean spirit identifies Jesus: "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?" (Mark 5:7). That title isn't random flattery from a demon - it reflects Deuteronomy 32:8-9, where "the Most High" allotted the nations to lesser spiritual powers, powers that rebelled and became corrupt (Psalm 82:1-5). The spirits recognize exactly who has authority over them, because they know exactly which cosmic hierarchy Jesus stands over.
This matters because these aren't primitive superstitions - they're precise theological claims. The spirits knew who "Most High" meant, and they knew Jesus outranked them.
