Acts Theology 31: Amos 9 and David's Tent

“‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, that the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things known from of old.’” This passage from Acts 15 is James's reference to Amos 9:11-12, presented as proof that Gentiles belong to God's people.
When James quotes this passage, the "tent of David" is not a literal, physical structure like a building or Tabernacle. Instead, the "booth of David" or "tent of David" refers to the Davidic dynasty, specifically Jesus, the Davidic Messiah. The promise of rebuilding and restoring it is understood as the resurrected Jesus re-establishing the Davidic dynasty and the kingdom over which it rules, which is the kingdom of God. While the Hebrew text of Amos 9:12 speaks of "possessing the remnant of Edom and all the nations," the Septuagint, which James quotes, changes "Edom" to "remnant of mankind." This makes the subject and object of seeking the Lord inverted, referring to mankind seeking the Lord, rather than the Davidic dynasty possessing Edom. This shows a theological interpretation, using a translation discrepancy to emphasize the inclusion of all humanity.
This understanding illustrates that prophetic fulfillment can work in various ways, not always through a strict, one-to-one literal correspondence of words. The inclusion of Gentiles into God's people through faith in Jesus is seen as the fulfillment of this prophecy, bringing together the scattered tribes of Israel and the nations under the Davidic Messiah. The events of Pentecost, where Jews from all over the world heard the gospel and returned to their nations, and the subsequent belief of Gentiles, are recognized as the kingdom of God expanding to reclaim the nations as God's people.
