Acts Theology 26: Satan and Death

"how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him" (Acts 10:38). Luke's phrase "oppressed by the devil" reaches further than any single case of demonic torment. Scripture treats death itself as enemy territory — a domain the devil holds a real claim over, since every person who dies unreconciled to God remains under that domain rather than under the life God alone gives. Read this way, "oppressed by the devil" names not just isolated incidents but the condition every unforgiven person is born into: cut off from the source of life and held within death's reach.
That claim is not symbolic. Because every human being eventually dies, and because sin leaves that debt unpaid, death's dominion has a genuine hold — until it is broken. Acts 10:38 is describing exactly this rescue in miniature: Jesus does not only heal specific demonic afflictions in the text, he begins undoing the larger captivity behind them, freeing people from the reach of the one who holds authority over the dead.
There is only one way out from under that claim — being joined to Jesus in his own resurrection. Union with him is what cancels the debt, lifts the guilt, and moves a person out of death's jurisdiction into God's. That transfer, from condemned to forgiven, from death's territory to life's, is what salvation actually means. Jesus's healing campaign in Acts 10:38 previews that same rescue at cosmic scale — proof that his authority does not stop at sickness and demons, but reaches all the way down to the grave itself.
