Acts Theology 23: Kush and the Nations

"Beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus... and he baptized him." The presence of an Ethiopian reading Isaiah is not unusual, as Ethiopian is a Semitic language related to Hebrew and Aramaic, meaning access to and translation of these texts was possible. The location of Ethiopia is also significant, as Ethiopia, referred to as Cush in the Old Testament, was prophesied to seek God (Psalm 68:31). This narrative, along with the evangelization of Samaria and Azotus (Ashdod), demonstrates a progressive outreach beyond purely Jewish converts or proselytes, setting the stage for the direct mission to Gentiles.
The immediate faith and baptism of the eunuch illustrate the fulfillment of prophecy, showing that the message of the Suffering Servant brings nations to God, just as prophets like Isaiah and the Psalmist foretold. This event is a crucial step in God's plan to reclaim all nations.
