Acts Theology 22: Spirit Validation

"They sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit." This passage illustrates that Samaritans received the Holy Spirit through the ministry of the apostles. Similarly, when Gentiles heard the word, the Holy Spirit fell on them, leading to their baptism in Jesus's name, confirming their inclusion. For disciples previously connected to John's baptism, receiving the Holy Spirit followed their baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus. These occurrences underscore that the reception of the Spirit validates inclusion in the new covenant community.
The mention of Samaria in Acts 8 is significant because, according to Acts 1:8, the gospel was to be taken to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Samaria, a region with a complex history involving the apostasy of the northern tribes of Israel, was considered "spiritually awful" by some Jews due to ethnic and theological differences stemming from the Assyrian exile (2 Kings 17). The narrative in Acts emphasizes that God is reclaiming this area, signifying that people from this region, regardless of historical circumstances, can be part of God's people. Just as Jews from disinherited nations embraced the truth at Pentecost, Samaria's inclusion demonstrates God's plan to reclaim believers from all regions. The Holy Spirit's reception in Samaria confirmed that this outreach was part of God’s plan, initiated at Pentecost, for building His new people from every nation.
The consistent message is that God has people for His family in all places. The gospel is first for the Jew and then expands beyond those in the lineage of Abraham. God's own Spirit-given witness, rather than ethnicity or human gatekeeping, grounds this inclusion. This principle ensures that the gospel permeates every corner of the world, demonstrating that God owns all territory and has people everywhere. The apostles, initially needing to understand this broader scope, learned through events like the Spirit's reception by Samaritans and Gentiles, that God's family includes all who believe.
