Acts Theology 15: Voluntary Generosity

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship... they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need." This passage describes believers sharing possessions to meet needs within the new covenant community.
This voluntary sharing in Acts 2 did not abolish private property but rather stemmed from a renewed generosity of heart. It is distinct from socialism or communism because it lacked state authority and coercion. The early church in Jerusalem, though generous, was notably poor; thus, this passage does not endorse a utopian economic model.
