Acts Theology 14: Baptism and Allegiance

Baptism is about choosing sides.
Acts treats baptism as public allegiance to Jesus. Repentance and baptism mark identification with the crucified and risen Messiah, and Gentiles who receive the Spirit are baptized into the same people. Romans explains the deeper meaning: baptism joins believers to Christ's death and resurrection life.
This matters because baptism is not empty ritual. It publicly marks repentance, allegiance, Spirit-created belonging, and union with Christ.

- Acts 2:38 - "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins... For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off..." This calls hearers to repent and be baptized in Jesus' name for forgiveness and the promised Spirit.
- Acts 10:44-48 - "The Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word... Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" This shows Gentiles receiving the Spirit and being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
- Romans 6:3-4 - "All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death... so we too might walk in newness of life." This says baptism joins believers to Christ's death and resurrection so they walk in newness of life.
