Acts Theology 129: Self-Defense: A Biblical Perspective

In Luke 22:36, Jesus tells His disciples, “the one who has no sword should sell his cloak and buy one.” This instruction, on its face, seems to endorse preparation for self-defense. Yet, the same disciples, hearing Jesus' words in Matthew 26:52, ‘Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword,’ might find themselves in a complex situation when attempting to decipher what exactly the Bible teaches about self-defense.
The biblical narrative presents a nuanced view. We see figures like Abraham using force to rescue Lot, and Israelite kings defending their people, with God granting them victory. The conquest of Canaan itself involved physical force as part of God's command. These examples suggest that the use of force for defense is not unilaterally condemned in Scripture. The emphasis seems to be on offensive aggression being 'clearly disallowed' rather than self-preservation or the protection of innocent life.
While there isn't a singular prescribed stance, believers are encouraged to seek wisdom in each situation. The emphasis is less on rigid rules and more on the underlying intent: to protect innocent life, not to engage in aggression for selfish gain. This allows for both seeking divine intervention and, when necessary, employing means for protection, recognizing that God honors both faithful prayer and responsible action.
