Acts Theology 117: Paul, The Law, And Jewish Believers

In Acts 21:20-21, James says to Paul, "You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed. They are all zealous for the law, and they have been told about you that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or walk according to our customs." This highlights a significant misunderstanding.
Paul's teaching did not advocate for Jewish believers to abandon the Law; rather, he clarified that observance of the Law was not determinative for salvation (as asserted in 1 Corinthians 7:19: "circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters"). He distinguishes between salvation through Christ, which is for all, and cultural/religious practices that Jewish believers could continue to uphold if they so chose, provided they did not impose them on Gentiles. He actively sought to maintain good relationships with Jewish leaders and to avoid causing offense, as seen in his participation in the vow.
This situation reminds us of the delicate balance between theological truth and cultural sensitivity in ministry. While salvation is solely by grace through faith, respect for cultural practices and traditions, where they do not contradict core gospel tenets, can be crucial for unity and effective witness. It challenges us to discern where to stand firm on doctrine and where to be flexible in practice, particularly when engaging with diverse communities of faith.
