Acts Theology 103: Salvation By Grace, Not Law

The core debate in Acts 15 began with some from Judea teaching, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved" (Acts 15:1). This false teaching led to significant debate even among early believers.
This passage underscores a fundamental tension in early Christianity: the relationship between Jewish law and Gentile salvation. The assertion that Gentiles needed to be circumcised and follow the Law of Moses to be saved reflected a misunderstanding of God's redemptive plan. Peter, Paul, and Barnabas vehemently opposed this, arguing that God had made no distinction, cleansing hearts by faith directly.
The resolution of the Jerusalem Council affirmed that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by adherence to the Law of Moses. This truth remains central to the gospel today. Our standing before God is not earned through rituals or rule-keeping, but graciously received through belief in Jesus. This freedom in Christ liberates us to serve Him out of love, not out of a need to gain acceptance.
