Acts Theology 7: Table of Nations

"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). This verse is not about vague geography for evangelism, but rather about the reclamation of all disinherited people.
The "ends of the earth" refers to the nations scattered at Babel, creating a nations storyline from Genesis 10 to Deuteronomy 32. In Genesis 10, the "clans of the sons of Noah" are listed as those from whom "the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood." Deuteronomy 32:8-9 further elaborates on this, stating, "When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance... the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage." The allowance of these scattered nations under the authority of other divine beings, while Israel was God's direct portion, was part of a divine council worldview. In Acts 1, the commission to be witnesses to the "ends of the earth" signifies the beginning of God's plan to reclaim all the nations for Himself through Jesus, bringing them back into His family. This global mission finds its starting point in Jerusalem, God's dwelling place, and expands to include not only Jews but also Gentiles. This is a progressive playing out toward an ultimate conclusion.
This understanding matters because the mission described in Acts is not a generic plan for expansion but rather the continuation of the biblical narrative concerning God’s dominion over all nations. It shows how the early church understood the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies in their time and how this informs our understanding of the ongoing mission today. This reclamation is for all people who belong to Christ, those who have the Spirit, and are therefore true believers, constituting a remade and reconstituted family of God.
