Acts Theology 4: Election and Salvation

God's election of a people does not work mechanically. Deuteronomy 7 explains that God chose Israel because of His love and His oath, not their greatness. This placed them in a position of immense privilege, but it was not a guarantee of salvation.
At Pentecost, Peter calls these same covenant people to repent and be baptized in Jesus' name for forgiveness and the Spirit's life (Acts 2). The new covenant requires a personal response. As Paul says, it is faith in Christ that makes one a true child of Abraham and an heir to God's promise, whether Jew or Gentile (Galatians 3).
This matters because election is grace and vocation, but salvation is received through repentance, faith, and belonging to Christ.

- Acts 2:38-39 - "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins... For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off..." This calls covenant hearers to repent, receive forgiveness and the Spirit, and hear the promise extend to those far off.
- Deuteronomy 7:6-8 - "The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession... because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath..." This says Israel was chosen as God's treasured possession because of God's love and oath, not Israel's greatness.
- Galatians 3:26-29 - "In Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith... And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise." This says those who belong to Christ by faith are Abraham's offspring and heirs according to promise.
