A Sign They Belonged

I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.
A sign is a marker of belonging. The same formula appears in Exodus 31 - a sign between me and you, that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.
One caution from the scholarship in the library, and it is a useful one. The exile did not come because of Sabbath profanation. Breaking the sign was an external indicator of covenant breaking, not the offence itself.
